04/01/21 - Deputy Injury on Traffic Stop

Post Date:04/03/2021 7:55 AM
On Thursday, April 1st, 2021 at approximately 8:43p.m., a Deputy with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Interstate 41 near CTH B for traveling without any taillights illuminated as it was during hours of darkness. This was located in the Township of Byron. The Deputy requested an additional officer due to the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and two Troopers from the Wisconsin State Patrol arrived on scene. Both the driver and passenger were requested to exit the vehicle. The driver cooperated with orders from law enforcement while the passenger refused to exit the vehicle. As the driver exited the vehicle, the passenger then moved over the center console and entered the driver seat. The Deputy and Troopers attempted to remove the individual, however the individual was able to accelerate away from the traffic stop with the officers partially inside the vehicle. The Deputy and one of the Troopers were dragged with the vehicle for a short distance before being thrown from the vehicle, landing in the southbound lanes of Interstate 41. Officers attempted to pursue the vehicle but quickly lost sight of it.

The suspect, a 43-year-old Milwaukee man, is currently wanted by the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol for charges of Recklessly Endangering Safety, Battery to Law Enforcement Officers, Fleeing or Eluding Law Enforcement, Operate Vehicle without Owner’s Consent, Hit and Run Cause Injury and Resisting or Obstructing an Officer. The Sheriff’s Office is currently working with Milwaukee area law enforcement to locate the suspect.

The Deputy was treated and released from a local hospital with minor injuries. Neither Trooper received any medical attention.
